Lessons Learnt

During the course of GMP a number of lessons were learnt which have gone on to inform our future capacity development work. These are summarised below:

  • PhD fellowship programmes should be open and competitive to ensure that only the most able and committed applicants are enrolled.Vector project, village landscape

  • PhD and post-doctoral fellowship programmes should be sufficiently well funded to allow a successful candidate to conduct a worthwhile and locally relevant research project.

  • PhD students need support outside their specific area of research to develop their career as independent scientists: a Personal Development Plan programme provides one way of doing this.

  • Providing PhD students with a first post-doctoral grant at an African institution upon completion of their PhD encourages their return to Africa. However, reintegration into their home institution can still prove to be difficult.
