The Gates Malaria Partnership (GMP) officially came to an end in 2010, but the decision to continue operating the GMP Website provides an invaluable resource for all who are engaged or otherwise interested in the fight against malaria. The many important lessons learnt throughout the implementation of GMP and the high level of achievement, well beyond the original GMP objectives and targets, will continue to inform not only the policy makers at the global, regional and country levels, but also researchers and funding agencies worldwide.

The value of the 400-plus peer reviewed publications on applied medical research directed at improving access to effective tools already available to fight malaria, and of malaria research capacity development, which are readily accessible through the GMP Website are too obvious to restate, but the structure and management of the GMP have other valuable and innovative experiences to be shared.

The nature of the GMP partnership between the 4 European and 5 African institutions, and the approaches to individual and institutional capacity development, have resulted in the establishment of research groups of excellence in malaria and other health related research, which continue operating effectively. The vast majority of the 35 PhD fellows trained under the Partnership are still working in research within Africa. GMP generated or contributed significantly to emergence of new Partnerships/Consortia such as: IPTi on Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Infants; the Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) consortium; MiP on the reduction of the adverse effects of Malaria in Pregnancy and IVCC, the Innovative Vector Control Consortium.

I am sure all those who served as members of GMP Expert Oversight Committee join me in congratulating the GMP Management Team for this initiative and to offer once again our special thank you to our donor, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
