National Institute for Medical Council (NIMR), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

The Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Service Organisation under the Ministry of Health. It was established by the Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 and became operational in 1980. NIMR was empowered to take over all health research institutions in the country, which until the demise of the East African Community (in 1977) were administered by the East African Medical Research Council. The establishment of this institute was in recognition by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania of the need to generate scientific data and information required in the development of better methods and techniques of enhancing disease management, prevention and control in the country. NIMR is the largest health research institution and the key board that oversees all regulatory issues of health research in Tanzania.
